The ASE A1 Engine Repair certification test lasts 75 minutes and includes 55 questions, of which 45 are scored. Prepare across the five official content areas, using the task list to identify gaps. Certification also requires approved relevant work experience or an accepted combination of training and experience.
What does A1 assess?
A1 is the Engine Repair test in ASE’s Automobile series. Its questions assess diagnostic and repair knowledge for cars and light trucks.
The initial test contains 45 scored questions and 10 unscored research questions. You are not told which are unscored, so answer every question. Each multiple-choice question has one correct answer.
The official task list explains the work covered by each area. A question relates to one or more listed tasks, but your particular test does not necessarily include every task.

Check the experience requirement
For A1, the usual requirement is two years of relevant hands-on experience. ASE may grant credit for qualifying formal training; check its current substitution rules.
You may take the test before your experience is approved. Passing produces a score report, while certification waits until ASE has reviewed and approved the required experience information. Submit the work-experience form through ASE’s process.
Canadian technicians can satisfy the one- and two-year Repair Technician requirements with a valid provincial automotive trade certificate attached to the form.

Use the task list to organize practice
Review each A1 task and identify whether you can explain its purpose, interpret the relevant information and identify what further evidence is needed.
General Engine Diagnosis accounts for 40% of scored questions. Its tasks include checking the reported concern and service information, inspecting leaks, investigating noise and vibration, and interpreting engine and cylinder test results.
The remaining areas cover cylinder heads and valve trains, engine blocks, lubrication and cooling, and associated fuel, electrical, ignition, air-induction and exhaust systems. Use the full task list to check the details under each area.
For a task you find difficult, review suitable technical learning material and the applicable service information, then practice a supported example. A symptom alone may not establish a unique cause. Avoid treating a memorized measurement limit as valid for every engine.
Work ASE’s sample questions to learn the formats and special instructions. After each practice set, record whether an error came from missing knowledge, misreading the question, interpreting a result or calculating with units. Use that record to choose the next task to revisit.

Practice: compare a measurement with a stated limit
Checking bearing clearances is an A1 Engine Block task. This original paper exercise supplies hypothetical values to practice interpreting a measurement; they are not specifications for an actual engine.

For this exercise only, assume an acceptable clearance is 0.020–0.050 mm inclusive. A supplied measurement is 0.060 mm. Is it within the stated interval? If not, by how much does it exceed the nearest limit?

It is above the interval, exceeding the upper limit by 0.010 mm.
Compare like units: 0.060 mm is greater than 0.050 mm. Subtract the upper limit: 0.060 − 0.050 = 0.010 mm. This establishes only that the supplied value is outside the hypothetical interval. It does not identify a cause or prescribe a repair. An actual assessment requires the applicable service information and properly obtained measurements.
Register and check the current costs
Register through myASE, then schedule and take the test within 90 days of purchase. An initial A1 certification attempt is taken at a test center.
ASE currently lists a $62 general test fee and a $34 registration fee per order. For one A1 test in an order, that is $96 before applicable sales tax. The registration charge is per order, so do not add it separately to every test in the same order.
The current summer registration window closes September 30, 2026; the published fall window runs October 10–December 31. Check availability and the expiry of your own purchased test when choosing an appointment.
Check the admission instructions for identification and arrival time. Appointment changes require cancellation first and are not allowed within three days of the scheduled appointment.

Keep initial certification and renewal separate
A1 certification is valid for five years. The shorter recertification test has 23 questions and a 30-minute limit.
ASE also offers remote recertification and the Renewal App for eligible A-series technicians. Check the current conditions for the route you select; the options for an initial test and maintaining an existing credential differ.
Master Automobile Technician status requires current certification in A1 through A8 and the experience requirement. A9 is not required for that status.
